Sermon for Nov. 16, 2008: “Good and Faithful”
Scripture Reading: Matthew 25:14-30
God has entrusted each of us with gifts, talents, abilities or resources. These are placed in our hands so that we may put them to work for the promotion or advancement of the purposes of God. Our joy, our happiness, is the result of knowing that what we have been entrusted with, we have used for the common good. Putting our gifts to work requires that we take some risks. Without taking a chance, we will never see growth. Without risk there in no return on our investment. Zero risk does not mean zero return, it means negative return. What we have will lose value (be taken from us) if we don’t put it to work. “Use it or lose it” as the saying goes.
This whole business of using our gifts, taking risks and producing returns is what we mean when we talk about stewardship. As a church, we have been given much. What will we do with what we have? That is the question each of us is asked to ponder.
