Sermon for Oct. 12, 2008: “Changing God’s Mind”

Scripture Lessons: Genesis 32:22-30Exodus 32:1-14

In this weeks sermon we considered two stories of men struggling with God.  In both the stories of Jacob and Moses, the humans prevailed.  Especially in the story of Moses on Mt. Sinai, the man challenges what God intends to do and argues God out of it.  Finally God relents and changes his mind.  We saw that Moses stood in solidarity with the people even when that meant challenging God.  As one commentator put it, “Moses meets God head-to-head in this confrontation, putting everything on the line for the people at the base of the mountain. He reminds God of the promises that God has made, and challenges God to keep his word.  Even more remarkable than Moses’ taking a stance for the people, even to the point of making demands of God, is that God listens!”  (See Karla Suomala )
